A 30-year-old mom was seized by authorities after her 4-year-old daughter shared packets of heroin to other students at a local day care center, the Delaware State Police reportedly said.
Cops and medical personnel responded to the Hickory Tree Child Care Center at 11:45 a.m. on Monday, after staff members saw some of the children with small bags of white powder, USA Today reported.
The bags of white powdery substance were confiscated by the teachers and were immediately taken to the Selbyville Police Department where it was tested and determined to be heroin, according to the police.
Cops said the girl accidentally brought the packets of heroin into the day care in a backpack given by her mother after the child's own backpack was destroyed by a family pet Sunday night, Fox News has learned. The girl is said to have thought the packets were candy and began handing them out to other students.
A total of 249 packets of heroin weighing 3.735 grams were reportedly found in the backpack.
"None of the packets were opened by any of the kids," Master Cpl. Gary E. Fournier told USA Today.
Some children were taken to nearby hospitals as precautionary measures though, and were later released after they were thoroughly examined.
Ashley Tull of Selbyville, Del., the woman identified as the mother of the tot who also has a 9-year-old boy and an 11-year-old girl living with her, was arrested and charged with maintaining a drug property and three counts of endangering the welfare of a child, according to the International Business Times.
She was eventually released on a $6,000 bail and was ordered to have no contact with the three children who were placed under a relative's care.
Authorities reportedly said investigation of the case still ongoing and Tull could possibly face more charges.
